This stunning and rare First Edition of The Moral of Flowers was published by Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, Longman and J Hatchard in 1833.
Written by Rebecca Hey, English Poet, Artist and Writer. Her Moral of Flowers focuses on flower poems that convey religious and moral messages. It pairs original floral poetry with detailed natural history and renowned, hand-colored botanical illustrations created by artist William Clark. Hey’s primary goal was to "draw such a moral from each flower" based on its appearance, habitat, or properties.
The book is bound in contemporary half green Morocco. The green cloth is wholly lacking from the back board and missing approximately a third from the front board. There is marking to the boards and wear to the corners and extremities of the book. The spine is lightly sunned with wear to the spine ends.
Inside, the front hinge is cracked but firmed. There is some minor marking and discolouration to the pink endpapers. The pages are clean and bright with scattered foxing. There are 24 hand coloured plates, each with a loose tissue guard. There is an errata slip bound at the rear.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
