This stunning edition of Fables was published in London in 1757. So the book is from the Georgian era. The binding is later than this however, and features a contemporary quarter leather binding. There are five raised bands to the spine and marbled paper boards.
Due to it's later binding (which I'm unable to date), the book is outwardly in very good condition. There is light wear tot he corners and some discolouration to the leather spine.
Inside, it's curious to note that the dedication page has been misplaced by binder and appears opposite page 188. This book was originally published in two volumes but this edition has both volumes in one. The pages show age toning with sporadic foxing and marking. There are occasional chips to the page edges in places. There is slight offsetting of engravings on facing pages.
The engravings are really beautiful and the book is full of them. Also note that the text uses the old fashioned s that looks more like an f. It can make it challenging to read but worth the challenge!
Dimensions approximately 21.4cm x 14.5cm x 3.5cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
