This beautiful antiquarian book is A Botanical Lexicon in which the Terms of Botany are Applied, Derived, Explained, Contrasted and Exemplified. It was compiled by John Berkenhout and published for T Cadell in 1789. It's a Second Edition.
It's bound in full tree calf leather with gilt detail and leather title label to the spine. It's in very good condition, but the corners are worn and bumped, with the leather split to reveal the board beneath. The bottom corner of the back board is more noticeably dented. The leather shows some light marks and scuffs; the spine shows some wear and rubbing, with slight splitting to the leather at the spine ends.
Inside, there is a plate glued to the front pastedown with an impressive coat of arms and a penned name to the top of the title page. The pages show light age toning and scattered foxing throughout, with occasional handling marks. The type has the old fashioned long s that looks more like an f to modern eyes.
Dimensions approximately 19.4cm x 12.5cm x 2.8cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon. The bubble wrap I use is 100% biodegradable and the jiffy bags are recyclable.
Where possible, I use 100% recyclable paper tape, but sometimes I have to use clear plastic tape for extra strength.
