This stunning antique edition of The Poetical Works of John Greenleaf Whittier was published by Ward Lock and Co. The book itself is undated but there is a written inscription inside dated 1883. So the book is from the Victorian era. It's bound in full burgundy calf, with five raised bands to the spine and gilt tooling. The text block edges are marbled.
The book is in remarkably good condition but there is sunning and discolouration to the spine, with light wear to the leather. The boards show marks and scuffing, with faint scratches to the leather. There is also light wear to the corners and board edges. A few pages stick out slightly from the edge of the text block but they aren't loose.
Inside, the endpapers are marbled to match the edge of the text block. There is a written inscription on one of the preliminary blank pages. The pages show light age toning and sporadic foxing - this is most prominent to the preliminary and end pages. The books features pretty black and white plates.
Dimensions approximately 18.8cm x 13cm x 4cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string. The bubble wrap I use is either oxo-degradable (pale green in colour) or upcycled from deliveries I've had (this is clear and fully recyclable). The jiffy bags are recyclable.
Where possible, I use 100% recyclable paper tape, but sometimes I have to use clear plastic tape for extra strength.
