This delightful edition of The Illustrated Longfellow Birthday Book features a mounted sterling silver front cover - hallmarked for Birmingham 1904. The silver features a beautiful repousse design of flowers in an art nouveau style. Repousse is a metalworking technique where the metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to created a raised design.
The silver is in very good condition, with only minor scuffs and tarnishing. The leather shows more wear, with some slight damage to the spine ends (the tail of the spine has had the leather glued down where it had pushed upward. There is light wear to the corners and edges, and the back cover shows minor marks and scuffs.
Inside, there is splitting to the internal front hinge but the pages remain tightly bound. The front free endpaper has been removed. The pages show light age toning and occasional marking and foxing. There is no writing inside.
This little book measures just 12cm x 8cm x 2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned paper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
