This stunning antique edition of The Shipwreck A Poem by William Falconer was published by Adam and Charles Black in 1858.
The book is bound in red cloth with ornate gold gilt decoration to the boards and spine. This fine binding is a really beautiful example of an early Victorian book but it's showing quite significant wear. Despite this, it would make a lovely old reading copy - or as a display book on the shelf.
There is wear and splitting to the cloth at the corners and board edges, with fraying to the split cloth. The boards have marking and soiling, and there is bumping to the board edges. The gilt on the back board is slightly brighter than the gilt on the front board. The spine is sunned and discoloured, and there is loss and fraying to the cloth at the spine ends.
Inside, there is a name plate glued to the pastedown and a written note on the FFEP. The pages are age toned and there is occasional marking and foxing. There are some superficial cracks to the gutter in places but the pages remain tightly bound.
The book features beautiful black and white illustrations throughout. The edge of the text block is gold gilt (this has some scuffs and light soiling).
Dimensions approximately 20.5cm x 15.5cm x 2.5cm.
Each book purchased will be gift wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
