This striking edition of Nouveau Langage Des Fleurs was published in 1839. In English, it is The Language of Flowers, a popular way of sending secret messages to people in the 19th Century. Different flowers could be sent to represent different meanings.
It is bound in contemporary quarter leather with marbled paper boards resembling tree calf. It is in very good condition; it has some minor loss to the paper at the corners and occasional chips to the board edges. The spine is faintly sunned and there is some loss to the leather at the tail of the spine. Wear has caused surface loss to the leather at the head of the spine. There is also a slight split starting to the bottom of the back joint.
Inside, there is a stamped name to the top of the half title page and the pages show age toning and foxing throughout. The title page is a little loose with the binding thread pulling.
The book has 22 hand coloured plates (collated and complete) - there is no frontispiece. Dimensions approximately 15.8cm x 10.7cm x 2.6cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string. The bubble wrap I use is 100% biodegradable and the jiffy bags are recyclable.
