This beautiful antique two volume edition of Shirley by Charlotte Bronte was published by John Grant in 1905. So the books are from the mid Edwardian era. The books are uniformly bound in green cloth with gilt floral decoration to the spine. The edges of the text block are rough cut which is a lovely feature in old books - somehow it makes the books feel even older, as if you're handling parchment!
The books are in good condition for their age but there are some marks and scuffs to the boards, as well as some mottled spotting. The corners are worn and there is sunning and marking to the spines. The gilt is still bright.
Inside, the endpapers are tanned but the rest of the pages show lighter age toning. There are occasional marks and foxing in places. One of the frontispieces is missing it’s tissue guard.
The books feature a handful of beautiful black and white illustration plates, which make them an extra special read :) Dimensions of each volume approximately 21.5cm x 15cm x 4.3cm.
The books will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
