This antique hardback edition of John Halifax, Gentleman by Mrs Craik was published by Adam and Charles Black in 1912. It is bound in brown cloth with striking art nouveau detail to the front board and spine. The design was created by AA Turbayne, a very well known and respected book cover designer. His signature scarab beetle can be seen to the front board.
The book is in very good condition but there are some light signs of wear. The corners are lightly worn with fraying to the cloth. The board edges are rubbed and faintly bumped, and there is minor marking and scuffing to the boards. The spine is very slightly sunned, with some marking to the cloth, and the spine ends are crushed which has caused minor splitting in the cloth.
Inside, there is light foxing and discolouration but the text is clear and bright. The text block edges are foxed. There are some superficial cracks to the gutter in places but the pages remain tightly bound.
There are some striking colour illustration plates inside which make this an extra special read.
Dimensions approximately 23cm x 16.5cm x 4.5cm.
Every book purchased will be hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I'm gradually in the process of switching to more eco-friendly packaging, including 100% recyclable jiffy bags.
