This beautiful, antique edition of the The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith was published by Chapman and Hall. The book itself is undated but after some research, I can narrow down the publication year to 1910 or 1911. This particular edition features beautiful colour plates by Margaret Jameson.
The book is quarter bound in cream vellum with delicate decoration in gilt to the spine - it features an unusual trailing pattern of flowers and leaves. The boards are bound in blue cloth and the top edge is gilt.
It's in very good condition but the book does show a slight forward lean and there is wear to the corners with slight fraying to the cloth. The boards show some light soiling and marking and there is very slight fraying to the edge of the cloth covering the front board. There is faint darkening to the spine and some small chips to the title label.
Inside, the endpapers are tanned and the rest of the pages show light age toning. There is scattered foxing throughout. The colour plates by Margaret Jameson are delightful.
Dimensions approximately 20.5cm x 14.3cm x 2.7cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
