This stunning and rare antique edition of Melincourt by Thomas Love Peacock features the beautiful and iconic AA Turbayne designed binding of a stylized peacock. This extraordinary art nouveau design includes Turbayne's signature - the small AT initials in the bottom left corner. Albert Angus Turbayne created stunning book cover designs in the late 19th Century, towards the end of the Victorian era.
It was published in 1896 by Macmillan and Co Ltd and features illustrations by F.H.Townsend. The endpapers also feature beautiful stylized peacocks.
The book is bound in deep blue cloth elaborate gilt decoration of a peacock to the front board and spine. The edges of the text block are all gilt.
It's in very good condition, with the most noticeable flaw being the slight bowing to the front board and minor discolouration to the cloth and gilt near the fore-edge. The book shows a slight backwards lean and there is wear to the corners. The spine is lightly sunned and rubbed, with crushing to the spine ends.
Inside, there is discolouration to the endpapers and light age toning to the pages throughout. There is very occasional foxing and the tissue guard for the frontispiece is tanned.
Dimensions approximately 18.6cm x 13.3cm x 3.3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
