This stunning little antique book features Macaulay's Lays of Ancient Rome. It was published by JM Dent and Sons. The book is undated, but I'd estimate it to be from circa 1920.
The book features a limp leather binding, with a blind stamped insignia to the front cover. Limp leather bindings originated from the medieval era but they became popular again in the late Victorian period. The leather extends over the edge of the book block in what's known as a yapp binding. This makes it very easy for the leather to become damaged and torn around the edges.
It's in remarkably good condition but there is some marking and light staining to the leather. The edges of the cover show some wear. Crushing to the spine ends has caused splitting to the head of the spine.
Inside, there is a stain to the bottom of the preliminary and a tear to the top of the front free endpaper. The pages have some tanning but are otherwise clean and bright.
Dimensions approximately 15.5cm x 11.5cm x 1.5cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-fuldegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
