This special edition of Being and Doing A Selection of Helpful Thoughts was published by Edward Howell in 1917. And the reason it's special has nothing to do with the binding or the book - it's because of the ephemera inside.
The book was gifted to Margaret Branson in memory of her Confirmation in 1922, by her friend and vicar Geoffrey C Lunt. Now Mr Lunt went on to become the well known bishop of Salisbury in 1946 but Margaret obviously remained incredibly fond of him. There are two letters from the bishop tucked inside, as well as a newspaper clipping of his obituary. He was bishop for only 2 years as he sadly passed away in 1948.
The book is bound in full leather, with gilt lettering to the front. It's in good condition for it's age but has obviously been well used and loved. There is wear and bumping to the corners and rubbing to the edges of the covers. The leather is marked and there is creasing to the front cover. The book has a forward lean and the pages inside are rippled. The spine is faintly sunned and rubbed, with wear and minor splitting to the spine ends.
Inside, there is a written inscription on the front pastedown and some loose letters tucked inside. The pages show age toning and sporadic foxing, and there is staining to the page edges in places The paper is very thin and there is creasing to some of the pages; some of the pages also show small tears and chips to the edges.
Dimensions approximately 13.5cm x 9.3cm x 1.2cm.
Each book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned paper and string.
