This lovely and scarce edition of The Wild Flowers, Birds & Insects of The Months, Popularly and Poetically Described, with Numerous Anecdotes being a Complete Circle of The Seasons was published by James Hogg. The book is undated but after some research, I've managed to date it to the 1860's. So the book is early Victorian. It was written by HG Adams.
The book is in good condition but does have some condition points to be aware of. The spine is dulled and darkened, and there has been some past restoration work (a new cloth spine has been inserted underneath the original spine). There is splitting to the joints but the old spine is securely glued to the new spine. There is wear to the corners and the boards show light rubbing. Each corner of the front board has gilt decoration to represent each season.
Inside, the front free endpaper has been removed so the book opens onto the verso of the frontispiece. A few pages stick out from the edges of the text block and there are occasional cracks to the gutter - despite this, the pages remain securely attached. The pages show age toning throughout and occasional foxing.
There are striking black and white illustrations throughout which make this an extra special read. Dimensions approximately 17.3cm x 12cm x 2.7cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
