This beautiful edition of "Uncle Tom's" Story from 1789 to 1876 features the story of Rev Josiah Henson, Mrs Harriet Beecher Stowe's real life Uncle Tom. It was published by Christian Age Office in 1877. So the book is from the mid Victorian era. This 1877 edition was a revised and expanded version of his life story, published to help Henson pay off debts from his abolitionist work in Canada. The book chronicles his birth into slavery, escape to Canada, and his efforts to help other fugitives through the British-American Institute in Dresden, Ontario.
It's bound in blue cloth over bevelled boards, with gilt and black decoration to the front board and spine. It's in good condition but the book has a slight forward lean and there is wear to the corners, with a bit of fraying to the cloth. There is light marking to the boards and sunning to the spine. The spine edges are rubbed and the spine ends are crushed.
Inside, there is water staining to the front endpaper and cracking to the back hinge. A name has been neatly stamped on the FFEP. The pages are clean and bright with sporadic foxing and marking. There are occasional cracks to the gutter in places but the pages feel tightly bound.
Dimensions approximately 18.5cm x 13cm x 2.2cm.
All books purchased will be hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
