This beautiful edition of Adeline or The Romance of the Forest by Ann Radcliffe was published by William Nicholson and Sons Ltd. The book isn't dated but I'd estimate it to be late Victorian (circa 1890). Antique editions of Ann Radcliffe's books are incredibly hard to find so I'm very excited to be able to offer this in my shop. She was considered to be the leading writer of the Gothic novel, so much so that the genre was often dubbed 'The Radcliffe Romance'.
The book is bound in dark green cloth with a pretty decoration blind stamped in black to the front board and gilt to the spine. It's an attractive binding and in near fine condition. There is minor marking and soiling to the cloth and rubbing to the spine edges. The spine is sunned, with a little dulling to the gilt.
Inside, there is a name and address stamped to the half title page and again to the verso of the frontispiece (a wonderful colour plate). The pages show light age toning throughout and the top corner of the back free endpaper has been cut away.
Dimensions approximately 15cm x 10.5cm x 2.4cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
