This beautiful vintage edition of william blackwood by George Eliot was published by William Blackwood and Sons. The book is undated but I'd estimate it to be circa 1890/1900. The binding is not original but would have been a custom set for someone's library.
It is finely bound in half calf over pale brown cloth boards. The spine features two raised bands and gilt tooling of pretty pansies - an unusual decoration and very striking. Top edge is gilt.
It's in very good condition with just some wear to the corners and light marking to the boards. The leather shows scuffing and the spine is darkened, with some loss to the surface of the leather. There is also minor loss to the gilt and some marking to the text block edges.
Inside, the book features beautiful marbled endpapers and there are no inscriptions. The pages are clean and bright with only occasional foxing. Some of the page edges are a little jagged - it is likely that the book was released with some uncut pages, and a past reader has separated them by hand.
Dimensions approximately 19.5cm x 13.7cm x 4.2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
