This beautiful antique edition of The Poetical Works of James Montgomery was published by Gall and Inglis. The book itself is undated but I'd estimate it to be from the mid Victorian era (circa 1870).
The book is bound in green cloth with elaborate gold gilt decoration blind stamped into the front board and spine. It's a really stunning example of the beauty of Victorian bookbinding. It's in remarkably good condition but there is some wear to the corners and the book shows a forward lean. There is light rubbing and marking to the boards, and the spine shows some rubbing. There is crushing to the spine ends.
Inside, there is cracking to the hinges but the pages remain tightly bound. There is some pencilled numbers in the top corner of the front free endpaper. and the pages are lightly toned. There is sporadic marking and foxing and minor cracking to the gutter in places.
Book dimensions approximately 17.5cm x 12cm x 4cm.
The book features eight stunning black and white illustrations based on original steel engravings. The pages are edged with gold gilt.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough.
