This stunning edition of The Complete Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott was published by George Routledge and Son in 1885. The book features a cream spine with gilt lettering and decoration. All edges are gilt. The boards are mauchline ware and feature a really beautiful raised colour illustration to the front board.
Mauchline Ware was a technique that originated in the 1830's in the Scottish town of Mauchline in which a transfer print was applied to a lacquered wooden object. It became popular in book bindings in the mid to late Victorian era.
It's in very good condition but the spine shows soiling and rubbing, with some minor chipping to the surface of the spine. The boards show minor scratches and marks, and there is dulling to the top edge of the text block.
Inside, the endpapers feature a beautiful floral design and there is a written inscription on the front pastedown. The pages show light age toning and occasional marking and foxing but are remarkably clean and bright. The tissue guard for the frontispiece is tanned.
