This beautiful antique edition of The Joyce Mercer Edition of Andersen and Grimm was published by Hutchinson and Co. The book is undated but after some research I'd estimate it to be from the 1930's. It features the well known classic fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen and The Brothers Grimm, with accompanying illustrations by Joyce Mercer.
The book is bound in original publisher's grey cloth with pictorial decoration to the front board and spine. It's been professionally rebacked, so a new cloth spine has been inserted before the original spine is glued over the top. This retains as much of the original features of the book as possible, whilst preserving the book in a readable condition for many years to come.
It's in very good condition for it's age with just light wear and crushing to the corners which has caused very slight splitting in the cloth. The board edges show some wear and bumping and the boards are lightly marked and stained. There is some rubbing and minor loss to the decoration on the front board and spine. The new spine can be seen in places around the edge of the old one. The original spine is darkened.
Inside, the hinges have been reinforced with tape and the pages are clean and bright with no inscriptions or dedications. There is light age toning and creasing to the pages throughout, with occasional minor marks.
The book features a huge collection of black and white illustrations alongside 16 colour plates by Joyce Mercer. Collated and complete.
Dimensions approximately20.5cm x 16cm x 3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
