This beautiful antique edition of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte was published by Walter Scott Publishing. The book itself is undated but there is a presentation plate inside dated 1898. So the book is from the end of the Victorian era.
It’s bound in red cloth with beautiful floral decoration and gilt to the front board and spine. The boards are bevelled and the text block edges are gilt. It’s a bright copy, in remarkably good condition for its age. The book shows a forward lean and there is some wear and crushing to the corners - with minor fraying to the cloth. The boards show some soiling as well as light marking and scuffing. There are some air bubbles underneath the cloth of the front board but this is subtle. The board edges are lightly bumped and the spine shows some faint sunning. There is minor rubbing to the spine edges with a very tiny hole in the cloth to the front external hinge. The spine ends are crushed; the text block edges show some minor soiling and scuffing.
Inside, the floral endpapers show a little tanning and there is a presentation plate glued to the front pastedown. The pages show light age toning, with foxing and marking in places. There is some staining to the bottom edge of the text block which can be seen from the front free endpaper to Page 56 (it does not reach the text). Sadly there is a tear to the bottom edge of Page 25.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
