This sought after edition of J M Barrie's Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was published by Hodder and Stoughton. The book is undated but I'd estimate it to be circa 1920's.
The book is bound in green cloth with gilt decoration to the front board of Peter sitting on a toadstool playing a pipe. There is gilt lettering to the spine and the pages are rough cut. The book has undergone restoration work and has had a cloth spine reback. This is where a new cloth spine is inserted and the original spine is glued over the top. It's a lovely way to make the book readable for many years to come, whilst still preserving the original features.
It's in good condition for it's age but the book does show a slight forward lean and there is light wear and bumping to the corners. The boards show some marking and there is some minor loss to the surface of the cloth which has just taken some of the green away. The spine is sunned and discoloured, and the new cloth spine can just be seen peeking out beneath the old one at the spine ends.
Inside, there is significant age toning and foxing throughout, with occasional creasing to the paper. Four of the colour plates have been repaired with tape (and one tissue guard), and a few of the plates show wear and tear around the edges.
There are 24 colour plates by the iconic illustrator Arthur Rackham, and they really capture the life and spirit of this story.
Dimensions approximately 20cm x 15.5cm x 3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in bubble wrap, patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
