This scarce book is a reprint of the very rare first edition that was originally published in 1785. This edition is a facsimile of the first edition, including the title page, so there is no publisher or date given for this reprint.
This edition of Grose's A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue is an "unmutilated reprint of the much sought after first edition...and contains words and explanations which in the later editions have either been omitted or softened."
It is bound in quarter leather over red paper boards and even though it is undated, I'd estimate it to be from the Victorian era (1800's).
It's in good condition for it's age, but there is significant wear and crushing to the corners, with loss to the paper. The board edges are a little worn, with some chips and occasional peeling to the paper. The boards are marked and scuffed, with some soiling, and there is wear and faint sunning to the spine. The spine ends and edges show most wear, with some loss to the surface of the leather.
Inside, the endpapers are beautifully marbled and the pages show age toning throughout, with sporadic foxing and marking.
Dimensions approximately 19.4cm x 13.7cm x 2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
