This beautiful and scarce antique edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll was published by Macmillan and Co in 1911. It's in original publisher's cloth and in near fine condition, with an interesting backstory traced through the inscription.
There is light wear and crushing to the corners, and minor marks to the boards. The back board shows a faint scuff and bump. The spine has some small marks and there is crushing to the spine ends.
Inside, the pages show light age toning and occasional foxing/marking. There is a written inscription on the half title page reading..."Fletcher William Lowndes Stone Norton from W Wheeler, Cadwell Farm, Brightwell Baldwin July 1912 The Oldest Tenant on the estate."
Now I've done some research to find out more about this and discovered that The Brightwell estate dates back to the 1600's and Fletcher William inherited the estate from his father in 1934. Fletcher William's grandparents married in 1862 (Catherine married the Soldier Robert Thomas Lowndes Norton of Anningsley Park) and in their marriage Settlement, it was agreed and required that every family member succeeding to the Brightwell Estate would bear the names and arms of Lowndes, Stone, & Norton. Hence the rather long name in the inscription!
The book features beautiful black and white illustrations by John Tenniel which make it an extra special read.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
