This beautiful edition of Tales of the Canterbury Pilgrims Retold from Chaucer and Others was published by Wells Gardner Darton and Co in 1910. So the book is from the late Edwardian era.
The book is bound in black cloth with striking decoration in gilt to the front board and spine. It's a really beautiful binding and in very good condition. The book shows a forward lean and there is light wear to the corners. There are some marks to the back board and very minor rubbing to the gilt in places. The spine ends are crushed.
Inside, the pages have some age toning and occasional foxing but are otherwise clean and bright. There is a presentation plate glued to the front pastedown. There is very slight cracking to the front hinge and occasional cracking to the gutter in places. Despite this, the pages remain tight to the binding.
There are striking black and white illustrations throughout by Hugh Thomson, an illustrator best known for illustrating Jane Austen's works.

The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
