This beautiful edition of Tom Cringle's Log by Michael Scott was published by Macmillan and Co in 1895.
The book is bound in teal cloth with elaborate gilt decoration of flowers and vines to the front board and spine. The cover was designed by the iconic book designer AA Turbayne, and his signature scarab beetle can be seen on the front board.
This stunning edition is in good condition for it's age but there are signs of wear. Most noticeably, the spine is faded, with rubbing to the gilt and crushing to the spine ends. This crushing has caused slight splitting to the cloth. The corners are lightly bumped and worn, and there are some minor bumps to the board edges. The back board has some small marks, and there is bubbling to the cloth in places.
Inside, the endpapers feature the iconic yellow peacock. There is an old price sticker to the front endpaper and a crossed out name and date on the back of the front free endpaper. The tissue guard of the frontispiece is heavily tanned, which has caused some slight discolouration to the title page and frontispiece. There is some light foxing and marking to the pages, and a couple of pencil annotations in the margin. There is also one instance where someone has gone over a swear word in black marker pen - something I've never seen in an old book before!
The book features beautiful black and white illustrations and the edge of the pages are tinted gold.
Dimensions approximately 18.8cm x 13cm x 3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
