This lovely pocket edition of Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk was part of the Banbury Cross Series and was prepared for children by Grace Rhys. It was published in 1894 by J M Dent and Company. It is bound in maroon cloth with blind stamped gilt decoration to the front cover. The book still has it's original tie but the slit in the front board where you tuck the tie is fraying.
The book is in remarkably good condition considering it's 130 years old but the book shows a forward lean and there is wear and bumping to the corners. The boards are a little warped, and there is dulling to the cloth covering the front board and spine. There is faint marking to the front cover and sadly there is some splitting to the cloth at the head of the spine.
Inside, the endpapers are tanned and there are cracks to the gutter in places - despite this the pages remain tightly bound. The pages show light age toning and occasional minor marking but are in good, antique condition.
There are beautiful black and white illustrations throughout.
This little book measures approximately 15cm x 9.5cm x 1cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned paper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
