This beautiful antique edition of Shirley by Charlotte Bronte was published by Smith, Elder and Co in 1880. So the book is from the late Victorian era. The book has undergone some restoration work - the text block has been resewn as several pages were loose and the internal hinges have been reinforced. The spine has been rebacked, which is a process involving putting a new cloth spine underneath the original one.
It's in good condition for it's age but there are condition points to be aware of. The book has a forward lean and there is wear to the corners. The board edges are bumped and the boards show light marking and soiling. The spine is darkened and rubbed, and crushing to the spine ends has caused some splitting in the cloth. You can see the new cloth spine peeking out from the old one around the hinges.
Inside, the hinges have been reinforced with tape and there is a neatly written name on the front free endpaper. The pages show tanning and foxing throughout, with sporadic marking to the paper.
