This stunning complete collection of the Life and Works of the Bronte Sisters was published in the 1880's (1883 and 1884) by Smith, Elder and Co - the publisher that first published Charlotte's books. They are finely bound in half calf leather, with marbled paper boards and marbled text block edges. The spines feature five raised bands and leather title labels, with ornate gilt decoration.
The set is in remarkably good condition for it's age, but there is marking and scuffing to the leather, with some loss to the surface of the leather in places. The corners are lightly worn and there is wear to the board edges. The spines show fading but there is also darkening to the leather at the bottom of the spines. There are some chips to the surface of the leather. The top edges of the text blocks are dulled and some of the leather title labels are flaking.
Inside, the endpapers are marbled and the pages show light age toning throughout. There is sporadic foxing and occasional marking, but the pages are clean and bright for their age and in near fine condition.
The books feature beautiful black and white plates which add to the charm and appeal of this Victorian set.
All books purchased will be hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
