I'm excited to offer a rare opportunity to purchase this beautiful early to mid Victorian copy of Shirley by Currer Bell (Charlotte Bronte). Early editions of Charlotte Bronte's novel are hard to find, especially in a fine half leather binding.

This beautiful antiquarian edition of Shirley by Currer Bell was published by Smith, Elder and Co is 1857. The book is bound in half calf leather with marbled paper boards. There are four raised bands with gilt detail to the spine, and a deep red leather title label.
The book is in good condition considering it's age, but there are some condition points to be aware of. There are two areas damage to the boards where the paper has been reglued down. The boards also show rubbing and scratching, and there is some peeling to the paper at the page edges. The leather shows some discolouration and loss to the surface in places, and the spine is sunned and chipped, with wear to the leather. There is light marking to the text block edges.
Inside, there is an old pencilled price to the front pastedown and there are cracks to the gutter in places but the pages remain tightly bound. The pages show age toning and foxing throughout, with occasional age staining. Some of the top corners of the pages have been dog eared in the past which has left creasing behind.

I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
