I'm excited to offer a rare opportunity to purchase this beautiful early to mid Victorian copy of Jane Eyre, written under Charlotte Bronte's Pseudonym Currer Bell. Early editions of Charlotte Bronte's most popular novel are hard to find and this is the oldest edition of Jane Eyre I've been able to offer in my shop to date. To put this is perspective, this book was published just two years after Charlotte's death.

This beautiful antique edition of Jane Eyre by Currer Bell was published by Smith, Elder and Co is 1857. The book is bound in original half calf leather with marbled paper boards and four raised bands to the spine. The raised bands feature delicate gilt detail and there is a leather title label to the spine.
The book is in good condition considering it's over 166 years old, but there are general signs of wear and use. The boards show some scuffs and faint scratches, with wear to the marbled paper. There is wear to the corners and board edges, with minor loss to the surface of the paper and leather. The spine is faded and discoloured, with some loss to the spine ends. The leather spine is rubbed, with minor chipping to the leather, and a small split starting to the top of the external back hinge. There is a small mark to the bottom edge of the text block.
Inside, there is a pencilled number and scribble to the front pastedown and a crack to the gutter after the front free endpaper. The pages show age toning and foxing throughout, with other more occasional marks and stains. The text remains clear and bright.
