This stunning and very scarce edition of Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen was published by Richard Bentley in 1853. It is full bound in calf leather and the spine features gilt decoration and five raised bands. It is important to know that the book has undergone some restoration work in it's past. It has had a leather spine reback. This is where the original spine is removed, and a new piece of leather is put in it's place. The original boards and spine are then reattached to save the original features. It's been tastefully done to retain the book's history.
It's in good condition, but the leather boards show noticeable marking, scuffing and discolouration. There is wear to the corners and board edges. The spine is darkened and there is a split starting to the top of the external back hinge. There are some small chips out of the spine, and rubbing to the end and raised bands. A crack to the leather at the top of the spine has been reglued.
Inside, there is a neatly written name and date on the first blank page. Sadly there is staining to the frontispiece and the pages show foxing in places. Considering the age of the book, however, they're in remarkably good condition. The endpapers are beautifully marbled.
The book will be wrapped securely in bubble wrap, patterned wallpaper and ribbon. Due to the value of this book, it will be sent via special delivery.
Dimensions approximately 17cm x 11cm x 2.5cm.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
