This beautiful half calf edition of Pencillings By the Way by N P Willis Esq was published by Henry G Bohn in 1845. So the book is from the early Victorian era. It's bound in half calf leather with beautiful marbled paper boards and five raised bands to the spine. The spine also features a leather title label and gilt tooling.
Pencillings by the Way is a travel book written by Nathaniel Parker Willis and contains an engrossing account of his travels through Europe. He describes his experiences at various European courts, as well as encounters with well known figures. He was a keen observer of social and cultural life.
It's in very good condition but there is some chipping to the surface of the leather and marbled paper in places. The spine is lightly faded and there is rubbing to the board edges. The boards are lightly marked.
Inside, there is age toning throughout, with occasional foxing and age staining. There is a crack to the gutter at the half title page. There are no inscriptions which is unusual in a book of this age.
Dimensions approximately 17.3cm x 11.5cm x 2.8cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).Half
