This beautiful, antique two volume edition of The Feathered Tribes of the British Isles by Robert Mudie was published by Whittaker and Co in 1834. It is the second edition of this classic ornithological work by Robert Mudie, featuring beautiful hand coloured plates as well as in-text black and white illustrations.
They're bound in original publisher's cloth with pretty floral and foliage detail to the cloth. The most important condition point to be aware of is the water damage to Volume Two - both outside and inside. There is wear and crushing to the corners and light shelf wear to the board edges. The boards have some marks, and volume two shows the staining from past water damage. The spines are faded and discoloured, with crushing to the spine ends which has caused minor splitting in the cloth. There are some tiny marks to the spine as well as some small holes to the cloth spine of volume two.
Inside, the pages show age toning throughout, with scattered marking and foxing. Some of the pages show creasing and the binding thread is visible at the gutter in places. Volume two has staining to the preliminary pages from paste water damage and there is a crack to the gutter at the title page. One segment of pages in volume two is loose but still attached (just!). The gutter at the title page of Volume One has been reinforced with tape and there is staining to the title page (the tissue guard for the frontispiece is also missing). The back free endpaper is also missing from volume one.
There are striking black and white illustrations within the text, and beautiful hand coloured plates as well. Two of the plates are in different places than stated in the Contents section and there is an addition plate in volume one not mentioned in the contents page.
