This beautiful First Eition of Old Fashioned Flowers by Sacheverell Sitwell was published by Country Life Limited in 1939. The book still has it's original dust jacket which is protected by clear plastic.
The book is described as the "first attempt to deal with the whole subject of old fashioned flowers. Tulips, Pinks, primroses, dahlias. John Farleigh best known as illustrator of Bernard Shaw here breaks new ground with one of the most ambitious experiments of lithography since the great days of floral prints in the earlier part of the nineteenth century." It gives the reader a glimpse into historical horticulture from Sir Sacheverell Sitwell, best known as a baroque-architecture specialist.
It's in good condition but there is wear and tear to the edges of the DJ, as well as loss to the surface of the paper in places. The paper is marked and tanned, the spine is particularly tanned, and there is loss to the spine ends. Underneath the DJ, the book is bound in green cloth - there is discolouration to the spine and edges of the boards. There is marking and splash stains to the front board. There is also foxing to the text block edges.
Inside, there is some pencilled writing to the front free endpaper and the pages show light age toning throughout, with sporadic foxing. The book is filled with black and white illustrations within the text, as well as the stunning colour plates by John Farleigh.
Book Size: 25.5cm x 19.5cm x 3.3cm (Approx.)
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string. The bubble wrap I use is 100% biodegradable and the jiffy bags are recyclable.
Where possible, I use 100% recyclable paper tape, but sometimes I have to use clear plastic tape for extra strength.
