This stunning and scarce book is Volume One of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte in what would once have been a set of two volumes - so it only contains the first half of the story. It was published by J.M Dent and Sons Ltd in 1905.
This particular binding is a much sought after edition due to the beautifully decorated boards and the iconic Edmund Dulac colour illustrations inside. Dulac was French born and initially started off studying for a career in Law. However, he soon made the decision to pursue a career in art and moved to London in the early 20th Century. In 1905 he received his first commission to illustrate the works of the Brontes which makes this the first edition with his illustrations. The illustrations he created are perhaps the most iconic of the Bronte illustrations.
The book is in good condition but there is darkening to the spine and minor splitting in the cloth at the spine ends. There is minor marking and soiling to the boards, whilst the corners show light wear.
Inside, there is a neatly written inscription on the front free endpaper. The pages are clean and bright with only occasional foxing.
There are six colour illustration plates by Edmund Dulac and the pages of the book are rough cut which is a wonderful feature in old books.

The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
