This stunning antique edition of The History of Pendennis by William Makepeace Thackeray was published by Keen, Robinson and Co. Keen's was a maker of Mustard and other food stuffs - the shell on the front of the book is their trademark. The book is undated but I'd estimate it to be from the turn of the century (circa 1900).
The book is bound in teal cloth over bevelled boards with beautiful floral and shell detail to the front board and spine. All edges gilt. It's a really striking binding and not one I've come across before. It's in very good condition with just light wear and bumping to the corners and board edges. There are some scratches to the front board and minor marks to the back board. The spine has some minor chips to the decoration and there is crushing to the spine ends.
Inside, the pages show tanning throughout with occasional foxing.
Dimensions approximately 18.7cm x 13cm x 3.5cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
