This lovely antique book of The Birthday Love Token was published by Milner and Company. The book is undated but there I'd estimate it to be late Victorian (circa 1880's).
The book is bound in dark cloth over bevelled boards, with stunning blind stamped decoration in black and gilt to the front board and spine. All edges gilt. It's in very good condition but there is wear to the extremities of the book - the cloth at the corners has split to reveal the board peeking through. There is marking to the boards and the front board is dulled. The gilt on the spine is much brighter. Crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting to the cloth at the tail of the spine.
Inside, the front free endpaper has been removed so the book opens onto the half title page. There is a bookseller's sticker in the top corner of the front pastedown. The pages show age toning throughout, with scattered foxing and marking. Some names have been filled in, in both pencil and pen. There is sporadic cracking to the gutter but the pages remain tight to the binding.
There are some pretty black and white plates, each with it's own tissue guard.
Dimensions approximately 14.2cm x 11.7cm x 2.8cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
