This beautiful vintage hardback of Grimm's Fairy Tales was published by Ward, Lock and Co as part of the sunshine series. The book is undated but I'd estimate it to be from circa 1930's.
The book features a green cloth spine and illustrated paper boards. It's in good condition but does show significant wear to the board edges and corners - this has caused peeling and loss to the paper. There is slight air bubbling to the paper covering the front board, and a small tear to the edge. The boards are lightly marked and the spine is rubbed and chipped, with loss to the surface colour of the cloth. Crushing to the spine ends has caused slight splitting in the cloth.
Inside, there is a written inscription on the front free endpaper and the pages show light age toning and scattered foxing throughout. There is a small one inch tear to the bottom of one colour plate (opposite page 20) and another similar size tear to the bottom of page 41. There are some cracks to the gutter but no loose pages.
The colour plates by Harry G Theaker are what make this a particularly delightful edition. He was perhaps best known for adding colour to the black and white illustrations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In 1911, with the approval of Alice illustrator John Tenniel, he was commissioned by the book's publisher Macmillan to colour sixteen of Tenniel’s plates. He famously coloured her dress blue – which has remained the dress colour associated with Alice in popular imagination ever since.
Dimensions approximately 25cm x 19cm x 2.5cm.
All books purchased will be hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
