This beautiful antique edition of The Amateur's Rose Book by Shirley Hibberd was published by Groombridge and Sons in 1885. So the book is from the Victorian era. It is bound in original brown cloth with blind stamped decoration in green and gilt to the front board and spine.
It's in very good condition, with light wear to the corners and marking to the boards. The book has a forward lean and there is rubbing to the spine edges; the spine is faintly sunned with crushing to the spine ends. There is minor foxing to the text block edges.
Inside, there is a stamped name, date and address to the half title page. The pages show light age toning and occasional foxing. There is splitting (approx 2 inch) to the fold out frontispiece and slight damage to the bottom of pages 49 - 56 (this doesn't reach the text). There is some underlining in the final chapter.
The book features three stunning chromolithograph plates (including the frontispiece) and numerous black and white line drawings within the text.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
