This lovely antiquarian edition of The Grave A Poem by Robert Blair was published by Adam and Charles Black in 1858. So the book is from the earlier part of the Victorian era.
The book is bound in red grey cloth with bevelled boards and stunning gold gilt decoration to the boards and spine. It's a really beautiful example of fine cloth bindings from the Victorian era.
It's in good condition but the corners are worn and the cloth has split to reveal the board beneath. There is light soiling and marking to the boards, including some more noticeable dark marks to the back board. The book shows a slight forward lean and the spine is sunned, with crushing to the spine ends that has caused splitting in the cloth. There is some loss to the cloth at the head of the spine.
Inside, there is pencilled writing to the front pastedown and a neatly written inscription on the front free endpaper. On the reverse of the FFEP there is another inscription. The pages show age toning and there is quite significant foxing throughout. There are superficial cracks to the gutter in places but the pages remain tightly bound.
There are stunning black and white illustrations throughout.
