This stunning little edition of Prayers and Meditations for Private Use was published by R and A Suttaby in 1850. So the book is from the very start of the Victorian era. It's taken from the writings of the Divines of the Anglican Church with an Introduction by the Rev John Chandler. It's bound in full Morocco over bevelled boards, with gilt lettering and detail to the front board and spine. The spine also features five raised bands and the gilt text block edges are gauffered. Gauffering describes the act of applying a patterned decoration to the text block edges of a book.
It's in near fine condition, with just some minor wear to the spine and a small chip to the leather at the head of the spine. There are minor marks to the leather and the top edge of the text block is slightly dulled.
Inside, the endpapers are marbled and there are no inscriptions. The pages show age toning and occasional foxing but are in very good condition for their age. There are a couple of small ink marks to the preliminary blank page.
Dimensions approximately 12.5cm x 8.5cm x 2cm.
Every book purchased will be hand wrapped in patterned paper and ribbon.
I try to use eco friendly packaging wherever possible. This includes 100% recycled jiffy bags, biodegradable bubble wrap, and paper offcuts from the newspaper industry.
