This lovely half leather book is just one volume in what would originally have been an entire set of the Works of Maria Edgeworth. There were originally 18 volumes in the set. Normally, I wouldn't sell a single volume but this binding is just so lovely that I couldn't resist. It was published in 1833 So the book is from the end of the Georgian era.
The book is half bound in leather, with marbled paper boards and three raised bands to the spine. The gilt tooling on the spine is particularly lovely, with small bouquets of flowers surrounded by a floral border. The text block edges are marbled.
It's in very good condition with just some wear and minor loss to the surface of the leather at the corners and spine edges. The boards show light rubbing and there is some wear to the board edges. The spine is slightly darkened, with minor wear and chipping to the surface of the leather in places.
Inside, the endpapers are beautifully marbled and there is a name plate stuck to the front pastedown. The pages show minor age toning, with foxing to the preliminary pages and last few pages.
Dimensions approximately 16.5cm x 11.3cm x 2.3cm.
The books will arrive securely wrapped in bubble wrap, patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
