This listing is for a beautiful leather bound edition of The Chase by William Somerville. Somerville was a poet in the 18th Century, and is best known for The Chase, which was originally written in 1735. This edition was published in 1825 by John Sharpe. The book is bound in full leather with stunning embossed work to the boards and gold gilt decoration to the spine.
It's in good condition considering it's almost 200 years old. There is significant wear to the corners and board edges, as well as the spine edges and ends. The boards have some light marks and scratches and the spine is faded. There is rubbing to the gold gilt work on the spine and some very slight loss to the title label. There is a very slight crack starting to the external front hinge.
Inside, the endpapers are beautifully marbled and there is a crossed out name on the first blank page. The page edges are noticeably rippled but this doesn't seem to have affected the text which is still clear and bright. There is discolouration and minor foxing to the pages throughout. Each poem has it's own illustration.
This little book measures just 14cm x 9cm x 2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string. The bubble wrap I use is 100% biodegradable and the jiffy bags are recyclable.
Where possible, I use 100% recyclable paper tape, but sometimes I have to use clear plastic tape for extra
