This striking edition of The Looking Glass for the Mind features an "Elegant collection of the most delightful stories and interesting tales" translated into English from the much admired L'Ami des Enfans. It was published in 1812 so the book is from the Georgian era. It features a contemporary leather spine and original marbled boards. The book contains a collection of stories with strong morals - something that became particularly popular in the 1800's. The book features seventy four wood cut illustrations which add to the charm of this antiquarian volume.
It's interesting to note that the name on the spine doesn't quite match the title of the book. It says "Looking Glass of the Mind" instead of "Looking Glass for the Mind".
It's in good condition but there is significant wear to the paper, with loss to the paper at the board edges. The leather corners have been lost but the contemporary spine is in excellent condition.
Inside, there are contemporary pastedowns that will have been added when the new spine was created. There is an ex libris stamp to the front free endpaper, and a neatly written name on the same page. Sadly there is a piece missing from the top corner of the FFEP. The pages show significant age toning, foxing and marking throughout, including soiling to the paper in places. There is creasing to some of the corners where the page has been folded in. A few pages have had repair work and there is a small piece missing to the edge of Page 125.
The book measures approximately 17.2cm x 11cm x 2.3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string. The bubble wrap I use is 100% biodegradable and the jiffy bags are recyclable.
