This beautiful edition of The Whipping Boy by E A Bulley was published by Wells Gardner Darton and Co. The book itself is undated but there is an inscription inside dated 1918.
It's the inscription that makes this book particularly special as it was a gift from his big brother - planned to be the first book of 18 and there's a sheet of paper ready to list the rest of the books gifted. Sadly no other books were gifted. I've researched the family and tragically big brother George (who gifted the book) was killed in Flanders in 1918, at the age of 28. Just 7 days before the end of the War.
The book is bound in red cloth with pictorial decoration to the front board and spine. It's in very good condition for it's age, with only minor marks to the boards and wear to the pictorial decoration. The text block edges show foxing.
Inside, there is age toning to the pages and scattered foxing. There is a written inscription on the front free endpaper and a piece of paper tucked inside.
Dimensions approximately 19cm x 13cm x 2.7cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
