This stunning antique edition of Voices of the Night Ballads and Poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was published by George Routledge and Co in 1858. So the book is from the earlier part of the Victorian era.
The book is bound in green cloth with beautiful blind stamped lettering in gold gilt to the front board and spine. It's in good condition but there is soiling and tarnishing to the front board, and rubbing to the back board. The corners show light wear and there is faint bumping to the board edges. The spine is very slightly darkened and there is crushing to the spine ends.
Inside, there is a neatly written inscription on the front free endpaper and the pages show foxing and age toning throughout. Despite this, the text is clear and bright. There is some superficial cracking to the gutter in places but the pages remain tightly bound. There is sporadic fingermarking to the pages.
There are beautiful black and white illustrations by John Gilbert, engraved by the Brothers Dalziel.

The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
