This stunning little edition of Companion for the Altar with Preparatory Considerations Addressed to those who are about to communicate. It was published by Peacock and Mansfield in 1844. So the book is from the very start of the Victorian era.
It features a full vellum binding with gilt detail to the boards and spine. The spine features a red leather title label and the gilt text block edges are gauffered. Gauffering describes the act of applying a patterned decoration to the text block edges of a book.
It's in very good condition but the vellum is noticeably soiled and marked (fairly typical for cream vellum) and the boards are bowed. The corners are worn and lightly crushed and there is some minor dulling to the gilt along the top edge of the text block.
Inside, there is a name plate glued to the top corner of the front pastedown and a written inscription opposite the half title page. The pages show age toning and occasional foxing but are in very good condition for their age.
