This beautiful edition of The Caxtons by Lord Lytton was published by George Routledge and Sons in 1874. So the book is from the mid Victorian era but the binding is more contemporary.
The book is bound in half calf, over marbled boards with marbled text block edges. The spine features five raised bands and beautiful gilt tooling - if one looks closely, one can see the gilt bird and flowers on the spine. It's in good condition, but there is wear to the corners and board edges which has caused some loss to the surface of the paper and leather. The boards show rubbing and scuffing, whilst the top edge of the text block is dulled. The spine is faded with some chips to the leather. There is also loss to the surface of the leather at the spine ends and edges.
Inside, the endpapers are marbled and there are no inscriptions. The pages show light age toning throughout with occasional foxing (this is most noticeable to the preliminary pages).
Dimensions approximately 18.5cm x 13cm x 3.5cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
