This lovely US First edition of Trilby by George du Maurier was published by Harpers and Brothers Publishers in 1894. So the book is from the late Victorian era.
George du Maurier is probably best known in modern times for being Daphne du Maurier's grandfather, but he was also a very successful author and illustrator. This particular edition contains beautiful illustrations by the author himself.
The book is bound in beige cloth with beautiful decoration in green and gilt to the front board. It's a really striking binding, with a winged heart caught in a spider's web. It's in good condition but sadly there is ink staining to the boards and bottom edge of the text block. The book shows a forward lean and the corners are crushed. There is some soiling to the cloth and the spine is darkened; crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth. A couple of page segments stick out slightly from the edge of the text block.
Inside, the pages show some age toning throughout, with sporadic marking and creasing in places. There is also occasional foxing and some cracks to the gutter which has revealed the binding thread and webbing. There are no loose pages.
The book is profusely illustrated by the author. Dimensions approximately 19cm x 13.2cm x 3.3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
